Case study: Innovative Welsh food business tackles public health challenges through clean-label nutrition
Ymchwil Tetrim Research, trading as YTR, is a Carmarthenshire-based food innovation business developing clean-label, functional foods using Welsh-grown ingredients. With support from Innovate UK, the company is leading a projects that aim to improve everyday nutrition while strengthening regional food supply chains across Mid and North Wales.
Functional Ageing Nutrition Beverage Innovation (FANBI) project addresses malnutrition among older adults. FANBI is developing high-protein powdered milkshake beverages in familiar tea and cocoa flavours, designed to mix easily with milk or plant-based alternatives. The products combine natural, plant-based vitamin and mineral blends with functional ingredients such as hemp and lion's mane mushroom, supporting muscle retention, cognitive health and overall wellbeing without relying on synthetic additives.
The projects is delivered through a strong regional collaboration. Aberystwyth University leads nutritional profiling and digestion studies , supported by AberInnovation's analytical facilities. Twisted Orange guides consumer acceptability, market readiness and bilingual packaging.
