Overview
Formally constituted in January 2022, the Corporate Joint Committee for Mid Wales covers the local authority areas of Ceredigion and Powys, and Bannau Brycheiniog for strategic development planning. The Mid Wales Corporate Joint Committee (MWCJC) is one of four established across Wales by the Welsh Government. This initiative aims to enhance local democracy and accountability by integrating decision-making processes in three critical areas: Regional Transport Planning, Strategic Development Planning, and Economic Wellbeing.
Committee Members
The committee is composed of the two Leaders from across the region. The roles of the Chair and CEO rotate annually. Members include:
- The Leader of Ceredigion County Council
- The Leader of Powys County Council
- The Vice-Chair of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (involved in matters relating specifically to strategic planning).
- Senior representatives from the above organisations
- Chief Executive Officers (CEO's)
- Monitoring Officer
- Chief Financial Officer (Section 151)
Mid Wales Corporate Joint Committee Governance Structure
Objectives
The Mid Wales Corporate Joint Committee is charged with the following responsibilities:
- Regional Transport Planning: Focusing on improving transportation infrastructure and connectivity within the region.
- Strategic Development Planning: Creating and implementing comprehensive plans for sustainable regional growth.
- Economic Wellbeing: Initiating and supporting projects aimed at boosting the regional economy.
Legislative Background
The establishment of the Corporate Joint Committees, including the one for Mid Wales, is part of the reforms introduced by the Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act 2021. This act was designed to foster greater collaboration and efficiency among local authorities in Wales.
